Over the course of the 20th Century Men and Women gradually changed the way that they defined their wealth eventually using the latest home and personal electronics to display their status. The 21st Century has now become a world of the gadget! Twentieth Century Gives Way To A World Of GadgetsThroughout the 20th Century fashions and trends changed quicker than at any previous century in the history of the human race. The industrial revolution, two world wars and the invention of the computer followed by the microchip all helped to speed up technology. In the early years of the 20th Century, the Motor Car started to capture peoples imagination and as we moved through this century people more and more identified their wealth and status by their personal effects. In the last thirty years the focus moved towards the latest electronic gadgetry. The Television, the HiFi system, the Video Recorder and even personal gadgets such as in the late 70‘s the LED Wrist Watch followed by the LCD Version. Then the designer labels got involved concentrating on designer clothes and designer gadgets New Gadgets in the 1990’s were DVD Players, Widescreen and Projector TV’s and although Mobile Phones first came about in the 1980’s, in the mid 90’s onwards they became smaller, slicker and cheaper. Then came text messaging, which saw an explosion in the desirability of personal communication technology. Into the 21st Century, after we all realised that the Millennium Bug wasn’t going to destroy the world, the mobile phone became the absolute must have gadget especially for the younger generation. Then everything went digital opening up the way for a feast of new gadgets First was the change over of the mobile phone network from analogue to digital, then there was digital photography, CD’s started to give way to the MP3, especially after Internet Broadband became ‘not just for the office’. Suddenly Apple got their act together. They had been making brilliant computers for years, but the iPod was a trailblazer dominating the MP3 player market. Putting all of these digital gadgets together into the latest personal toys has been the way to sell the latest ‘must haves’. Now the latest gadgets have cameras, MP3’s, Internet access and the specification just gets better. And with manufacturers constantly trying to outdo one another for a bigger piece of the market, the trend for ever more complex and powerful new gadgets is set to continue.
