What has turned the world into a global village? Here we look at the advances in technology over recent years and how new gadgets have made there mark by making the world seem like a smaller place When I was a boy I remember being lucky enough to holiday in Majorca. Back then, most people still holidayed in the UK, so there weren’t the huge resorts that there are now and hotels tended to be smaller with fewer Brits. Walking into a shop with my parents we bumped into a couple that were good friends of my parents. I remember them saying - ‘Isn’t the world a small place.’ Call it a coincidence, but meeting somebody in a foreign destination like that was unusual. These days we are living in what has been termed as the ‘Global Village’, which effectively means that because of global communication, the world seems like all one village So how did this all come about? New gadgets have brought a plethora of communication mediums to us all. First of all it was the mobile phone, which gave us mobile speech then SMS and MMS. Then on the back of the computer came the Internet, which has opened up communications completely. Eventually putting the technologies together has meant that we have a range of new gadgets with which it is possible to communicate globally. New gadgets like the latest smart phone and PDA’s have mobile Internet, with comprehensive e-mail facilities. The latest gadgets for men like these offer so many mind-boggling functions and ways to communicate. It is even possible to use social networking sites whilst on the move. Photographs, documents and even videos can be exchanged at the touch of a button, so is it a crazy world that is too hooked-up? These special new gadgets have enabled friends, family and business colleagues to keep in touch and thereby turning the world into the global village. Don't be afraid of technological changes.
